The Risk-X Institute is seeking qualified candidates for the position of UX Engineer, Front End (Web) to support the work of the centre and its scientific research programmes. The research institute is established by the Southern University of Science and Technology (Shenzhen, China) in collaboration with the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH Zurich, Switzerland). The position offers the opportunity to work in a developing, multicultural environment with teams researching diverse topics such as risks in finance, earthquakes, real estate, geo hazards, energy, epidemics, catastrophic risks, social networks, cyber security etc. for the betterment of society through practical research. 

Key responsibilities

？ Work closely with project managers, engineers and researchers to implement versatile front-end solutions to web development issues.

？ Embrace emerging standards while promoting best practices in order to push the limits of what a browser can do.

？ Manage your own time and work well both independently and as part of a team.

？ Launch, iterate and make a difference. Provide front-end coding expertise and help make our products better for users.

？ Design and develop the front ends of user-facing products.

？ Come up with innovative ways to visualize multi-dimensional data in appealing and commonly comprehendible fashion.

Key skills

Minimal Qualifications:

？ Have a bachelor’s degree in computer science or an equivalent background (e.g., diploma with relevant experience)

？ Much desire and enthusiasm to work with a dynamic, growing and hard-working group

？ A "yes and" attitude instead of a "no but” attitude

？ English as a working language to ensure the communication with our international team

？ Experience with one or more of the following: JavaScript, Python or Java.

？ Experience with web technologies (object-oriented JavaScript, HTML, CSS), and experience with web standards, including HTML5 and CSS3.

？ Experience designing and implementing user interfaces (UIs).

？ Be versatile and able to develop with the growing needs of the Risks-X institute

？ Be customer oriented

？ Experience with JavaScript frameworks (React/Redux), CSS pre-processing frameworks (Sass or Less), design frameworks (Material-UI, Bootstrap).

Preferred Qualifications:

？ Experience with and passion for user-interface design.

？ Ability to create or acquire assets.

？ Demonstrated sense of web design and attuned to the fundamentals of user experience, including accessibility.

？ Ability to communicate to all levels of users (internal and external), demonstrated problem-solving skills, adaptable, proactive and willing to take ownership.

Cherry on ice:

？ Support backend efforts on need basis and avid knowledge of popular technologies to contribute in decision making.
