We are recruiting a postdoctoral researcher in mathematical modelling in the team ‘Communicable Diseases Surveillance and Modelling' at Institut Pierre Louis d'Epidemiologie et Santé Publique (IPLESP).
The Institut Pierre Louis d'Epidémiologie et de Santé Publique (IPLESP, UMRS-1136) is an Inserm and Sorbonne Université laboratory, created in January 2014. It is based in Paris, and located in two sites (Hôpital Saint- Antoine and Hôpital La Pitié-Salpetrière). IPLESP was founded with the view of gathering in one laboratory all forces in research in epidemiology and public health of Sorbonne Université.
The surveillance and modelling (SUMO) team of IPLESP is a unique combination of worldwide recognized research scientists developing infectious disease surveillance and mathematical and statistical modelling approaches to study infectious diseases of public health concern.
The post-holder will work in SUMO team, as part as a larger interdisciplinary project on the epidemiology of tick-borne zoonoses in France, covering field work, lab work and modelling. The project primarily studies Lyme borreliosis (LB) and tick-borne encephalitis (TBE), both transmitted by the same tick Ixodes ricinus. The post-holder is expected to develop mathematical models addressing Lyme borreliosis and tick-borne encephalitis transmission, and fit them to a series of datasets (on ticks, animals, human infection data), with the aim to estimate transmission parameters, explore the role of each compartment in human disease incidence, and look at the impact of different control strategies and climatic scenarios on disease burden.
The post-holder will be responsible for:
Developing mathematical models, from the conceptual biological the coding aspects
Providing a thorough description of datasets used for fitting
Working iteratively with collaborators to develop the model
Publishing the results in scientific peer-reviewed journals
Contributing to disseminate knowledge to the general public through the development of a web interface
Contributing to masters and PhD students supervision working in the project
Presenting the work in international conferences
We encourage the candidates will the following profile & skills to apply:
Mathematical modeller
PhD in a quantitative science (e.g., applied mathematics, physics, computer science, epidemiology)
Knowledge of epidemiology of infectious diseases and biological systems
Strong drive in conducting interdisciplinary research in the field of zoonoses and public health
Skills in model development, fitting and inference for infectious diseases dynamics
Fluent coding skills (R, python or C++)
Having published modelling papers in international peer-reviewed journals as lead author
Knowledge of statistics and their use in epidemiology is desirable
Good communicative skills to work in an interdisciplinary consortium (virologists, microbiologists, wildlife ecologists and tick specialists, experts in health agencies)
English (fluent written and oral)
Ability to work independently
