Position Details
Title Postdoctoral Research Fellow
Appointment Status Non-Tenure Track Department IU Bloomington Earth and Atmospheric Sciences Position Summary
The Earth and Atmospheric Sciences Department at Indiana University Bloomington seeks a Post-doctoral Research Fellow with compelling ideas for advancing understanding of the effects of climate variability and change on weather phenomena that impact human systems and/or the hydrologic cycle (e.g., coastal fog, atmospheric rivers, frontal systems, tropical cyclones, mesoscale convection, etc.). The position also has numerous opportunities for collaboration, both within Indiana University (e.g., with other atmospheric science faculty in the Earth and Atmospheric Sciences Department and researchers in the Environmental Resilience Institute) and with collaborators at a variety of universities and national laboratories (e.g., with the CASCADE Scientific Focus Area). The position includes free access to substantial high-performance computing resources available to researchers at IU. Additionally, the position comes with funding for attending multiple scientific conferences, workshops, and/or career development events.
Sample Research Questions of Interest to Prof. O'Brien:
● How do co-occurring weather phenomena (e.g., atmospheric rivers and mesoscale convective systems) differ from the same phenomena occurring in isolation?
● What are the most important factors that govern the spatiotemporal pattern of atmospheric river occurrence, moisture transport, and precipitation?
● How does the frequency of synoptic disturbances relate to the frequency of coastal fog, and will this change in a warming climate?
● How do changes in climate forcings affect precipitation in different weather phenomena and as a whole?
Primary Job Expectations:
● Lead two peer reviewed publications each year and contribute to others
● Conduct innovative research on the effects of climate variability and change on weather phenomena
● Communicate findings via oral or poster presentation at national and international workshops
Secondary Job Characteristics (negotiable):
● Mentor undergraduate and/or graduate student researchers
● Produce or contribute to open-source data analysis codes
● Produce or contribute to community datasets
● Contribute to science outreach and communication efforts
Basic Qualifications
A Ph.D. in Earth Science, Atmospheric Science, Computer Science, Statistics, or a related discipline is required prior to start date.
Department Contact for Questions

Additional Qualifications
The successful candidate will demonstrate proficiency in developing custom code for analyzing large climate-related datasets using modern open-source programming languages (e.g., Python, Julia, C++, etc.). The successful candidate will have the ability to identify cutting-edge areas of research related to the effects of climate variability and change on weather phenomena, strong evidence of an ability to communicate research via peer-reviewed publications, the ability to be productive in independent work and productive in a collaborative environment, and excellent written and oral communication skills.
