The Grantham Institute for Climate Change and the Environment are pleased to announce the 2022 Fellowship on extreme weather. This Fellowship is co-sponsored by GLS Bank in Germany and Liminalytics. The GLS Bank was the first social-ecological bank in Germany, founded in 1974. GLS stands for “Gemeinschaftsbank für Leihen und Schenken”. During your Fellowship, you will plan, carry out, and lead an independent high-quality programme of research on extreme weather (tropical and/or extra tropical). Translating the physical understanding to financial impact is one objective.
Throughout your Fellowship, we will provide financial support for 3 years, including a highly competitive salary, and a generous budget for research and travel expenses. You will be supported by world-leading academic staff, receive training, career support and development opportunities from the Postdoc and Fellows Development Centre, whilst working in a dynamic environment, with exposure to policy making and ground-breaking innovation.
Duties and responsibilities
• Independent research on extreme events
• Improved understanding of the impact of extreme events on the financial sector.
• To develop contacts and research collaborations within the College and the wider community including the financial sector
• To provide guidance to PhD Students
• Contribute to bids for research grants
• To actively participate in the research programme of the Institute
• To publish in high-quality journals and to present data at national and international meetings
• Regularly engage with GLS and Liminalytics.
Essential requirements
• Hold a PhD (or equivalent research, industrial or commercial experience) in atmospheric or climate science or a closely related discipline
• Knowledge of and strong publication record on weather extremes
• Creative approach to problem-solving
• Excellent written communication skills and the ability to write clearly and succinctly for publication
• Ability to direct the work of a small research team and motivate others to produce a high standard of work
Further information
This is a full-time, fixed term position for three years. You will be based at South Kensington Campus but travel to other campuses may be required as necessary.
