Overview

The Department of Animal, Dairy and Veterinary Sciences at Utah State University is seeking a Postdoctoral research fellow in Virology, Antiviral Chemotherapy, and Vaccines using in vitro and in vivo models at the Institute for Antiviral Research (IAR). The IAR consists of a team of five principal investigators with expertise in respiratory, hemorrhagic fever, and neuroinvasive viruses that collaborate to identify antiviral agents and vaccines against a wide range of human pathogenic viruses. The IAR and its researchers have been effectively involved in the pre-clinical development of several FDA-approved antiviral compounds, including ribavirin (Virazole™), ganciclovir (Cytovene™), stavudine (Zerit™), oseltamivir (Tamiflu™), and T-705 (favipiravir). Our NIH-sponsored research includes studies evaluating the in vivo (pre-clinical) efficacy of experimental therapeutics and vaccines to support FDA approval. This position will give broad experience for applicants interested in working in the pharmaceutical industry, or academia.

This is a two-year position, with possibility of continuing employment after two years. The position is available immediately.

Responsibilities

Specific to this position, a successful candidate will design, complete, and analyze experiments using antiviral compounds and vaccines for Influenza virus, Enterovirus (EV-D68 and EV-71), Echovirus, and SARS- CoV-2 infections using small animal models.

The candidate will mentor graduate and undergraduate students in the lab and work in a collaborative manner. The candidate should be able to present their data clearly in various platforms.

Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities:

Ability to work well with other technicians.

Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical personnel.

Ability to identify and solve problems.

Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.

Ability to perform routine calibration and maintenance of laboratory equipment.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum requirements are a Ph.D. in virology or a related field, especially with a background in the study of influenza viruses, enteroviruses, or SARS-CoV-2 are encouraged to apply.

Excellent communication, problem-solving, organization, and teamwork skills.

Experience handling mice and performing in vivo experiments is highly desirable.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with laboratory animal research while working in biosafety containment BSL2 or above.

Previous experience working with viruses.
