Postdoctoral Fellow on Planktonic Indicators of Pelagic Marine Habitats
Description
The postdoctoral fellow will analyse plankton diversity data acquired by long- term observatories in fixed stations or during monthly/seasonal spatial surveys covering the different pelagic habitats of the European North Atlantic (OSPAR Regional Seas Convention). He/she will participate in the calculation and development of “pelagic habitats” and “food webs” indicators from the different sets and types of data on abundance, biomass, taxonomic and functional diversity and plankton production and will explore the link between the results achieved and pressures including eutrophication and global change. A link will also be sought with the work of the other partners of the NEA PANACEA project, including links with pressures (mainly eutrophication) as well as food webs, benthic habitats and seabirds indicators. He/she will participate in a new assessment of the state of pelagic habitats for 2023 and will propose tools to member states for their own assessment of pelagic habitats as part of the MSFD.
The postdoctoral fellow will participate in the updating, research and application of plankton diversity and productivity indicators for the characterization of changes in state and functioning of pelagic coastal and offshore marine ecosystems. He/she will analyse marine biogeochemical and biological data from observation networks or services and will explore the potential use of data from innovative functional or taxonomic approaches. This work is part of the call of the “European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF) projects and research infrastructures” which co-finances the NEA PANACEA project (North East Atlantic project on biodiversity and eutrophication assessment integration and creation of effective measures) from 2021 to 2023. This project seeks to improve and extend the establishment and calculation of indicators in order to advance towards a new assessment of the state of pelagic habitats within the framework of the OSPAR Convention, in support of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) and assistance in the implementation of public policies.
The activities of the postdoctoral researcher will be carried out within the Pelagic Planktonic Ecology team (ECOP²) of the Laboratory Oceanology and Geosciences Laboratory (CNRS UMR 8187 LOG - ULCO - U Lille) of northern France, under the responsibility of the team leader. This post-doctorate is part of the Work Package 1 "Pelagic Habitats" of the NEA-PANACEA project (https: // ec.europa.eu/environment/marine/projects/indexen.htm) co-financed by the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF) between March 2021 and the end of February 2023. It is part of the continuation of the work of the recent EcApRHA project (2015-2017, https: // www. ospar.org/work- areas/bdc/ecaprha) as well as research actions on pelagic habitat indicators within the work of the various member states for the implementation of the Marine Environment Framework Directive (MSFD). Collaborations will be effective with the various partners of the NEA PANACEA project (in particular from WG2 Eutrophication and Trophic Networks), as well as colleagues from the “Pelagic Habitats” and “Food Webs” working groups of the Intersessional Correspondence Group on the Coordination of Biodiversity OSPAR Assessment and Monitoring (ICG-COBAM). He/she will participate and benefit from the discussions and work within the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) working groups on microbial and phytoplankton ecology (WG-PME), on biodiversity (WG-BIODIV ) and on the plankton morphological and molecular taxonomy (WG IMT), as well as the IOC UNESCO Trends PO working group. Collaborations will also be considered on automated approaches within the network of joint European coastal marine observatories JERICO S3 (www. jerico-ri.eu). Finally, the work will also benefit from the expertise of members of the LOG ECOP² team as well as experts in ecology and plankton diversity from the Littoral and Coastal Research Infrastructure ILICO (in France).
Eligibility criteria
The recruited person must have completed a Doctorate in aquatic or marine plankton ecology and have a professional experience of 0 to 2 years, with skills in plankton data analysis from field campaigns and time series, automated approaches, models as an xperience in calculating and interpreting diversity indices. Knowledge of setting up, calculating, integrating and aggregating indicators would be a plus. - Programming tools (e.g Matlab, R, Python) - Knowledge of statistical analysis methods (descriptive analyses, classification, time series analysis) - Interest in oceanography and marine biodiversity - English proficiency in oral and written communication - Strong capacity for autonomy - Good interpersonal skills and ability to interact with actors of various profiles - Strong adaptability - Be proactive for the management and analysis of large datasets and the representation of outputs generated by various statistical analyses.
