We are seeking a Post-Doctoral Researcher to join the Cochrane Lab on a three year fixed term contract (funding end date 31 Dec 2023). You will assist in the synthesis of novel antimicrobial peptides that are stable, easy to prepare and have enhanced antimicrobial activity. They will also determine how they kill bacteria, which is important knowledge if such peptides are to become antibiotics. Combatting antimicrobial resistance is one of the most significant challenges facing our generation. Bacteria are relentlessly developing new resistance mechanisms against clinical antibiotics, making infections much harder to treat. Therefore, there is an urgent need for new antimicrobial compounds and targets. Cyclic non-ribosomal peptides are often antimicrobial peptides that have strong activity against multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria, a class of bacteria that are much harder to kill as they have an extra cell membrane. Some classes are even active against Gram-negative organisms resistant to colistin, our current antibiotic of last resort. Therefore such peptides could be excellent antibiotic candidates.

The successful candidate must have: Have a degree in Chemistry or Medicinal Chemistry (Minimum standard 2:1). Have or about to obtain a PhD in Organic Chemistry. At least 3 years research experience in synthetic organic chemistry. Demonstrable Experience in the synthesis of complex cyclic peptides. Proven Track record of designing synthetic routes and performing multi- step chemical syntheses. Demonstrable Experience in antimicrobial susceptibility testing Proven ability of applying core analytical techniques, such as: (1D/2D NMR, MS).
